You may already know that all sofas are not created equally and if you are in the market to make a purchase, you will undoubtedly wanted to explore different styles and shape of sofa to find the best fit for your tastes and location. It does not matter so much what the room may be, choosing the right sofa involves taking the time to explore the various styles and shapes of sofa on the market and to have at least a general understanding of these various types before making a purchasing choice. Style and shape are similar but not the same when it comes to a sofa.

The most traditional style of sofa is that which has a back, legs or skirt. This is the foundation upon which many different styles and shapes of sofa are designed and built. An English-style sofa features slightly rounded arms, legs on castors and a tight seat that is slightly outset from the arms. This style of sofa is often referred as a Club sofa. The Tuxedo sofa has a traditional flare with arms that rise to the same height as the back. Often rounded pillows are placed on both ends of this type of sofa because the high arms are not comfortable for resting.

A Camelback sofa takes its place among the traditional styles and derives its name from the serpentine back that is situated behind arms that are high and rolled. Various bottoms complete Camelback, these ranging from stretchers and exposed legs to neat skirting beneath a tight, cushioned seat usually in three pieces. The Knole sofa hails its design from 17th century English style. With straight angled arms the same height as the back, the difference between the Tuxedo and Knole is that the arms are adjustable and stand straight or open out.

A Cabriole sofa has arms that offer a continuous contoured line from one side to the other. Cabriole sofas are often trimmed with wood and rest on visible legs. A Lawson sofa appeals to those who like square arms and a square design for the overall look of a sofa. Some Lawson sofa designs are outfitted with rolled arms. The Chesterfield is most commonly used in libraries and posh executive offices but can adorn any room with its tufted seat and rolled arms. Sectional and midcentury modern sofas sit on squared legs and have clean cut lines to compliment any décor.

Microfiber sofas are becoming popular because they offer easy maintenance. Increasingly, homes are incorporating microfiber sofas into their decoration schemes. Microfiber is the tiniest man made fiber possible with today’s technology. It is one hundred times finer than a human hair. It is very popular because fabrics produced from microfiber are soft, lightweight, and easy to care for. Additionally, the fibers leave no lint or dust, so they are highly recommended for allergy sufferers. These fibers are used to create clothing, cleaning cloths, polishing cloths, and all types of furniture including headboards, chairs, and sofas. Cleaning a microfiber sofa should not be a difficult process.

Microfiber, by its very nature, is stain resistant. As a result, stain products like Scotch Guard or other fabric protection materials are usually unnecessary with this type of sofa. Some furniture retail outlets offer protection plans that will help with stain resistance, so if that is one of your big concerns, contact your retailer to see if a protection plan is right for you.

For general cleaning, though, a drop or two of mild detergent, like dish soap or laundry detergent, combined with a bit of water should clean your microfiber sofa in no time. Odors like urine can be easily eliminated by blotting the stain with white vinegar and distilled water, applying baking soda, then vacuuming. For the most part, cleaning will be an easy process if it is true microfiber. Imposter materials, though, may be more difficult to clean.

The majority of microfiber sofas use polyester as the base fabric because it has the ability to absorb color better than other materials. As a result of this chemical process, the color is forced to stay in the fiber, and no other treatments will ever be necessary. It may be necessary to occasionally have your microfiber sofa steam cleaned. It is fairly safe, but a professional cleaning service might not only do the best cleaning job, but also do the best job of protecting your microfiber sofa. Finally, to clean lint from your sofa, a simple lint roller (the kind that is sticky) should be the best option. Vacuuming might help in some cases as well.

A couple of weeks ago a nice couple, we will call them the Smith’s (the name has been changed to protect the innocent), came into our store looking to replace their tired and worn-out sofa and love seat. That was their plan anyway.

As they were greeted by one of our awesome customer service experts, Mrs. Smith told our representative their dilemma. Along with their challenge, they brought a drawn out plan of their room with some measurements. About that time I walked by and saw this room measurement they brought with them and I became very curious. Even though I’ve been in this business a long time, I can learn a thing or two from our customers.

Mrs. Smith was so frustrated with their current living room furniture it depressed her walking into the room anymore. They are planning a big party in a few weeks and they want seating flexibility without losing the number of seats they now have, but they don’t want the room to be cluttered. She also didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of their friends and family by their old worn-out furniture. All Mr. Smith wanted was a nice chair to come home from a long day at work and be able to relax without his back getting tired. He said, “I want a chair for me, just like Martin Crane in the Frasier show.” Mrs. Smith said, “But not the ratty and awful green color, something that will fit in with my style and color choices.” I knew we could help solve both of their desires.

To make a longer story a bit shorter, we ended up helping them retain the same number of seats in the living room, provide flexibility, and solve Mr. Smith’s desire to have Martin Crane experience, but with some awesome style. They ended up ordering a custom fabric Flexsteel sofa. This new one is similar size to their existing sofa, but they also added two unique chairs to replace the loveseat. All-in-all, they kept their same number of seating, and had the flexibility to change their room around on the fly. And, they got the fabric they wanted.

They were in-and-out of our store in about 45 minutes, including the fabric choice. Why? They simple floor plan and old furniture measurements made all the difference in the world on how we can help them out. Mrs. Smith also brought in a couple of color swatches she absolutely loved so the fabric choice was simple.

The moral of the story? If you have a great idea what you would like, a few room measurements and even a picture or two, we can have some fun solving your dilemma.

Be sure to bring in measurements, pictures, colors, and fabrics to your local furniture store to make your buying experience much more enjoyable.
