Best Language to Learn – Arabic
Arabic is another language, like Chinese, which is so different from the European languages that learning it as a second language should be undertaken only by those with a knack for linguistics, and who enjoy a challenge. A completely different alphabet that bears no resemblance to either Latin or Cyrillic – which, for all their differences, are still close enough for the users of one to have little difficulty absorbing the other – and the letters look similar to the Western eye, so some practice will be needed before even the basic alphabet can be mastered.
One of the fascinating aspects of the Arabic tongue is that a certain series of consonants is used to refer to a general topic, and different patterns of consonants and vowels are then added to those consonants to make a whole range of words referring to specific objects related to that concept.
For example, k-t-b is the consonant root which relates to the general topic of writing, from which both kitabun (book) and maktabun (desk) derive, along with many other verbs and nouns, such as “to write,” “writer,” “library,” and so on. This is both an abstractly interesting method of building a language – helping to explain the almost mathematical precision of classical Arabic – and provides a key to readily expanding the vocabulary, since the consonantal roots running through related words provide a strong mnemonic aid for the learner.
The potential learner of Arabic should realize that it is a fairly guttural-sounding language, more so than any European language, with many sounds made in the top of the throat or involving that area of the respiratory system, rather than being formed chiefly in the mouth. This can be either exotic-sounding or harsh-sounding to the English-attuned ear, depending on personal tastes and inclinations. Thus, before choosing Arabic as a second language, you should listen to several minutes of conversation in the tongue and see if it is a language you will be comfortable speaking.
When it comes to choosing the best language to learn, you may want to pick a language that is exotic and interesting.
